We strive to uphold the ethical standards of the AMA (American Medical Association) Code of Medical Ethics. In November 14, 2017, the AMA (American Medical Association) adopted new ethical guidance for physicians in the media. While many professions have ethical standards, we apply this guidance broadly to health care media. ■The network will uphold the values, norms, and integrity of the medical and science professions. ■ The network will continually re-mind viewers to seek professional and qualified healthcare providers to address their unique circumstances or questions regarding their care when medical advice is provided. ■ Maintain cognizance of how the training, qualifications, experience, and advice of the presenters are being used by the network and how the information is being communicated to the viewers.
■ Experts are viewed as authori-tative figures when they engage with the media and the network strives to ensure that the information experts present is accurate, verifiable, inclusive of known risks and benefits, in accordance with their expertise, and insight from their professional experience.
■ The network stives that all information presented, should be within the scope of the presenters’ expertise and clearly distinguish the limitations of their scope of knowledge and training.
■ Avoid making diagnoses about individuals including public figures that they have not had the opportunity to manage.
■ HIPAA (Health Insurance Porta-bility and Accountability Act) was created to stipulate how personal identifiable information is managed by covered entities such as medical facilities, healthcare providers, and insurance companies that perform service transactions. Media outlets are not generally covered entities; however, to protect patient privacy and confidentiality, the network will not provide or reveal, under any circumstance, personally identifiable information unless the patient has explicitly granted permission to do so.
■ The network strives that all presenters and experts fully disclose any conflicts of interest and when applicable, avoid any situation that can pose a conflict of interest to a reasonable extent possible.
